I am an artist using a special formulation of concrete in my mixed media two-dimensional art.

Why use concrete? Concrete provides a flexible means of incorporating unusual design features in two-dimensional art. You can firmly embed wood or metal objects in the concrete, emboss deep patterns or lines, and develop low profile three-dimensional relief over a broad two-dimensional area. My work welcomes being touched unlike the conventional artwork that we experience.

Texture is the tactile quality of a surface. At an early age we reach out and touch surfaces thereby learning what different textures feel like. Painters simulate textures or create textures having a limited amount of relief, and in either case, you don't touch! My art utilizes, in addition to your sight, your tactile sense of touch. The surface, which can vary in depth, revels a "texture" not found in most two-dimensional art. It is a subtle stone or rock like three-dimensional texture on a two-dimensional artwork.

My contribution to the world of art is very unique. Concrete can be readily found in three-dimensional art such as sculpture, but rarely in two-dimensional flat wall art. The yearly global production of cement, the binding agent in concrete, is well over a billion tons; yet, a relatively miniscule amount is used in two-dimensional art! The almost total exclusion of concrete as a medium in conventional two-dimensional wall art is a significant abyss in the world of art!

My work is influenced by the two and three-dimensional textural features and colors in natural rocks and stones. I have a strong visceral drive to transform these natural aesthetic features into a variety abstract surfaces. Jasper Johns and Diebenkorn are major influences for the structural fashion of my work. The art process that I use is an undertaking between total chaos and complete control. The extra weight of the concrete is mitigated to a large extent by skillful design and solving an assortment of technical obstacles. The concrete is applied in a thin layer that makes the work relatively light and easily hangable. Weight of the pieces is generally less than 30 pounds and the dimensions are about 26 x 40".

Another very unique feature of my art is that some works fit into the New Media genre that includes electronics within artwork. Such works are denoted on the 'Gallery' pages with the orange colored phrase New Media Art next to the descriptive content. These works generally call for some initial interaction with the artwork. What follows is a dynamic light "show". The electric power for the electronically controlled light show is achieved with a single 9-volt battery. Here is a static image of such a light show.

New media art is a genre that encompasses artwork created with or including technology. It is here that I am attempting to expand the boundaries of two-dimensional art to bring to mind the technological age we live in. For millennium two-dimensional art has been static in nature. My goal is to integrate 21st century technological constructs into my art. Thus far some of my work includes "active" optical and electronic components.

My vision is to achieve a look not obtainable with traditional media. My education predisposed me to experimentation. Consequentially, my passion is to create an evolutionary body of work consisting of the integration of a wide variety of unconventional techniques, materials, and design elements.
